Creating opportunities for engagement

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on urban design - to create opportunities for neighbors to engage with one another.

Walking on Second Ave

As I walked to work this morning, I was reminded of a conversation about public spaces last summer. Someone brought up this space- underneath the Shelby Street Pedestrian bridge. Wouldn't it make a great area for a farmers market or flea market?

I wish this was...

Vacant building in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood
Have you ever walked by a vacant building in your neighborhood, and wish someone would do something about it? An artist in New Orleans had an idea on how to persuade others that their voice could (and should) be heard in matters related to urban design and planning.

Candy Chang began I wish this was after seeing the number of vacant storefronts in New Orleans neighborhoods, knowing there was an unmet need for services that could occupy these vacant spaces. By capturing the ideas of neighbors at the point of inspiration, these ideas can take on a life of their own, hopefully inspiring those individuals that have the means to create the change everyone seeks.
